Richard Berkowitz Honored with United Way Volunteerism Award

United Way of Miami Dade today recognized Richard A. Berkowitz, JD, CPA, with the Dorothy Shula Volunteerism Award at its annual meeting and Volunteer Awards.

The Dorothy Shula award recognizes an individual whose work in the community brings hope, promise and opportunity into the lives of others and has left a lasting positive impact on a person, group or community at large. |

Berkowitz has a long history of supporting the community through fundraising and board leadership. He is immediate past chair of The Miami Foundation where he served two years. Under his leadership, the organization established a Racial Justice Fund in the wake of the George Floyd murder, which garnered many grants and gifts.

Berkowitz has served as past chairman of The Miami Foundation, the Community Foundation of Broward and the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. He is a recipient of the Joyce Galya Award for Community Service from the University of Miami, the Florida CPAs in Public Service Award from the Florida Institute of CPAs and a Champion of Education from the Florida Department of Education.

Berkowitz is also active in professional endeavors, having served as a council member to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and past president of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants while maintaining ongoing membership in the American Arbitration Association, the Florida Academy of Certified Mediators, the Florida Bar and the Dade County Bar Association. He holds a juris doctorate from the University of Miami and a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
